BBQ Guy Dry Rub Review

Written by BBQ Guy on September 30, 2008 – 6:14 pm -

BBQ Dry RubI am always on the lookout for barbecue related products and accessories that I can try out.  When it comes to things like BBQ dry rubs and sauces there are so many options out there.  It seems like everyone has a “magic” recipe that makes their rub or sauce the best.  Most of them are good but I have to admit, I enjoy making my own rubs and sauces most of the time.  But, there are times when I just want to pull something out of the cabinet and use it without having to mix stuff up.

Hey, There’s Another BBQ Guy Out There

A few weeks ago I was going from site to site on the Smokering and I came upon The BBQ Guy site which caught my attention because I go by BBQGuy on this site and on Twitter.  So, I clicked through a few pages and came across a page selling his “award winning” Southern BBQ Rub.  It looked like maybe this guy actually has some “cred” having won a few competitions.  Well I was intrigued and I ordered a bottle to try out for myself.  I paid my $5 plus shipping and a few days later it arrived at my house.

What’s In The Bottle

The BBQ Guy rub comes in a 7 ounce bottle and contains (in order as listed on the ingredients label):

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Spanish Paprika
  • Chili Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Black Pepper
  • White Pepper
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Oregano

A pretty basic list of ingredients.  But, the “magic” of many rubs comes from how the ingredients are mixed, not the number of ingredients.  I am sure there was a lot of trial and error that went into the final mix that gives the rub the nice flavor profile that it has.

How Does It Taste

To test this rub I used it in a number of dishes and types of meat including ground beef, sirloin steak, pork loin, pork ribs, and chicken.  I grilled the steak, chicken, and burgers and smoked the pork loin and ribs.  In all cases the rub added a nice flavor to the meat.  It has a slightly sweet and salty up front flavor but then backs that up with a peppery and mildly spicy aftertaste.  The Oregano is definitely present throughout.  I tend to like my rubs to be spicy with a bit of a kick.  The BBQ Guy rub doesn’t have as much spice as I would prefer.  This is not a knock against the rub at all, just an observation.

Overall, I liked this rub and I think it would be a great addition to your BBQ spice cabinet.  For me, this will be one of my bench players as I like to make my own most of the time.  But, when I’m in a pinch the BBQ Guy Southern Rub will be there to save the day.
